Neuroscience Center at HIMA San Pablo Hospitals is the most comprehensive center for neurology and neurosurgery in Puerto Rico and the region.
The center’s stroke division at HIMA San Pablo Caguas is accredited bye the Joint Commission and meets the standards by the JC and the American Heart and Stroke Association as a Primary Stroke Center. The center has to follow standards , clinical practice guidelines and specific performance measures to be accredited.
In 2016 the stroke program was awarded Gold Plus Honor Roll status by the American Heart and Stroke Association. It is a hospital program for improving stroke care by promoting consistent adherence to the latest scientific treatment guidelines. Since its initiation in 2003, 1,656 hospitals have entered.Gold recognizes performance of 24 consecutive months or more. Plus is an additional level of recognition noting a hospitals expanded efforts to provide quality care through administering additional evidenced-based therapies beyond the TJC/CMS Core Measures and the Get With The Guidelines Performance Measures.
Additionally they are a Target: Stroke participating facility. Participating hospitals are committed to reaching the Target: Stroke performance goal of 50 percent or more of eligible patients treated with tPA within 60 minutes of hospital arrival. Ten key strategies were employed to meet this goal, including EMS prenotification of hospitals, activating the stroke arrival team with a single call, rapid acquisition and interpretation of brain imaging, use of specific protocols and tools, premixing tPA, a stroke-team-based approach and rapid performance data feedback.
The center’s epilepsy program is accredited by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers , it is the only comprehensive and accredited epilepsy center in Puerto Rico. The program is currently a Level 4 center . Fourth level center provides the more complex forms of intensive neurodiagnostics monitoring, as well as more extensive medical, neuropsychological, and psychosocial treatment. Fourth-level centers also offer a complete evaluation for epilepsy, surgery, including intracranial electrodes, and provide a broad range of surgical procedures for epilepsy.
The Multiple Sclerosis Center provides comprehensive and multidisciplinary attention to those who suffer of this chronic disease that compromises the central nervous system. Our Multiple Sclerosis Center is open to all patients who receive care from specialists neurologists in demyelinating diseases.The center has an area for drug infusion (directly into the bloodstream administration) as well as a space for taking lab samples and other services that these patients need.
The Center is composed of multiple neurologist and neurosurgeons with different sub-specialties, specialized nursing , E&E Technicians and ancillary services . In patient and out patient services are provided with a 10-bed 24/7 Epilepsy monitoring unit , Stroke Unit and a Neuro Intensive Care unit with full Critical Care Specialists.
