HIMA•San Pablo Hospital in Bayamon Cardiovascular Institute is the only accredited Chest Pain Center with Primary PCI in Puerto Rico.   Hospitals awarded this designation have Primary PCI available 24/7 every day of the year. This means they have a call team made up of the cardiac cath lab staff and an interventional cardiologist who arrive to the facility within 30 minutes of STEMI activation.

HIMA San Pablo Bayamon is a STEMI (Heart Attack) Receiving Center. The Accreditation identifies hospitals that participate in coordinated systems of care for ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and meet the following standards:

  • expertise, facilities and equipment to perform percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)
  • PCI readiness on a 24/7 basis
  • coordination with emergency medical services (EMS) and referral centers (non-PCI) to prepare for immediate treatment when STEMI patients arrive
  • facilitation of  STEMI patient transport
  • participation in a multidisciplinary team with representatives of EMS, emergency services, cardiac cath lab, quality improvement, coronary care unit, physician staff and nursing staff, meeting regularly to identify challenges and make continuous care improvements
  • continuing education, including training for hospital staff/local EMS and community awareness
  • use of systems for collecting data and measuring performance  to support continuous quality improvement

This accreditation is provided through a partnership between the American Heart Association and the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care, a healthcare credentialing organization that shares our quest to deliver quality heart attack treatment at hospitals across the nation.

The institute also  has been awarded Gold status within the Get With The Guidelines®-Heart Failure program. The program is the American Heart Association’s collaborative quality improvement program, demonstrated to improve adherence to evidence-based care of patients hospitalized with heart failure.Gold recognizes performance of 24 consecutive months or more.

HIMA San Pablo Bayamon is a  Target: Heart Failure participating hospital . The program draws from the American Heart Association’s vast collection of content-rich resources for patients and healthcare professionals, including educational tools, prevention programs, treatment guidelines, quality initiatives and outcome-based programs. Strategies deployed in Get With The Guidelines-Heart Failure have proven successful in lowering 30-day mortality rates and readmissions in heart failure patients, making it central to Target: Heart Failure.
